The Pressure Felt by Managers
It is not uncommon to have a certain level of disdain for your manager. Every work day managers attempt to maintain that delicate balance between the unrealistic expectations of the executive team, and the unmotivated work habits of their individual employees. Every employee has a story to tell and their personality traits that make them a challenge to manage, and every day their manager needs to find ways to motivate them to do their job so that everyone can benefit. It is a thankless job and with more companies removing middle management positions to cut costs and to get executives in more direct contact with the work force, it is also obvious that being a manager is becoming a lost art.
As common as it is for the average worker to harbor a bit of disdain for their boss, it is also equally as common for people to refuse the chance to join the management team if a promotion is offered. People see what their immediate supervisor has to deal with on a daily basis, and many generate the opinion that any increase in pay that may be offered is not worth the level of aggravation that comes with the higher position. While it can be a thankless job, many people pursue a promotion within their company because they are looking for added responsibility.
Some people thrive on the fast paced corporate world, and they desire to be as high up the corporate ladder as possible. People looking for a challenge do not take promotions because of pay raises or the promise of a better parking spot for their car, they take the promotion for the responsibility it brings and the chance to put their name on changes made within the company. They want to see what life is like as they climb the ladder of success, and the work their entire lives to make sure that they are fully qualified to get the next promotion that comes along.
Being a manager is not always what people perceive it to be, and most managers take their responsibilities very seriously. The fate of not only their employees is in their hands, but the fate of their employees’ families is also part of their responsibility as well. It is a job that not everyone wants, and it is also a job that not everyone is cut out for.
